Ordering coffee nowadays can be a lot more complicated than just asking for a cup of joe. There are so many other drinks to choose from! Do you get confused when you look at the menu at coffee shops? Ever wondered what goes into the different types of espresso drinks? The coffee geeks at Yummy Alert have made the ultimate cheat sheet of the most common coffee-based drinks and this is everything you need to know to order your coffee like a pro!
Avoid order anxiety by carefully planning your coffee drink before you ever get to the counter. Gone are the days of order stress caused by the fear of holding up the line. We have placed all of the info you need in the order you should list your custom coffee order.
You will want to choose between an 8oz, 12oz, and 16oz drink. 12oz is the standard drink size and a safe bet if you aren’t sure what size you want. Most specialty drinks don’t come in 8oz size due to the volume of the espresso.
Most Common Coffee Drinks
Espresso - one shot of espresso
Doppio - double shot of espresso
Cappuccino - espresso with bubbly milk and thick foam
Americano - hot water poured over a shot of espresso
Latte - two shots of espresso with thick steamed milk and little foam
Macchiato - one shot of espresso with a dollop of foamed milk
Types of milk
Believe it or not, there are a ton of different milk alternatives. When you order your espresso drink the barista will assume you want standard dairy milk but there are some options there too. A few common milk alternatives are soy milk, almond milk, and coconut milk. Some places also carry hemp milk which is made from hemp seeds but it is not common. For regular milk, you do not need to specify when ordering.
Hot, iced or blended?
Coffee is such a flexible drink that depending on the weather or your mood you can still order your perfect coffee hot, iced or blended. Iced coffee is perfect for a hot day and if you want a milder coffee. Blended drinks are like a coffee smoothie.
Foam or no foam?
When ordering milk-based drinks, there are a few things you need to know in order to avoid an awkward situation. Lucky for you, we are here to make your ordering experience as smooth as the coffee you will be sipping! ;) Most milk-based drinks can be categorized by “foaminess” or how much if any steamed milk foam is in each drink. A Latte is steamed milk and espresso with a little foam, a Cappuccino is foamier, while a Flat White has no foam. A Macchiato is an espresso with a dollop of foamed milk, and a Mocha is a latte with chocolate.
Bling It Up
Chances are your favorite coffee spot has a ton of different ways to flavor your drink whether it be with syrups or spice. What flavors do you love? Chocolate? Caramel? Strawberry!? Do you like a dash of cinnamon or powdered cocoa on top? If you aren’t sure if they’ve got your favorite coffee bling, be sure to ask the barista when you get to the front of the line.
When it is your turn to order, tell the barista the size, type of drink, whether you want the drink hot, iced or blended, and any additional flavors. For example, here is a typical coffee order: “Can I get a 12 ounce iced Latte with almond milk and one pump of caramel syrup?”
